Designing for empowering curriculum implementation

International advocacy for future-focused curriculum design often centres on the idea of “competencies” or “capabilities” as potentially transformative constructs high-level frameworks. This trend is exemplified by addition “key competencies” to 2007 New Zealand Curriculum. Despite good intentions, this structural change appears have made minimal difference learning that many students experience, assessment practices used evaluate learning. With a Curriculum Refresh currently underway, now an opportune moment revisit use competencies lever and ask how type they are intended stimulate might be conveyed implemented in more empowering ways.
 paper introduces “enduring umbrella construct effective conversations. Learning from what has proved problematic past, we show refocus thinking about purposes learning, while at same time being specific why traditional “content” need change. We illustrate potential drawing our recent collective endeavour build small set enduring school science education.
